David - Picture analysis
In this report, i will give you an extended picture analysis of the ‘statue’ ‘De David’ from Michelangelo.

A. Data of the object
My picture analysis will concern the marble statue which ‘De David’ is called. A men is represented, before he is going to duel with the god Goliath. The statue is made between 1501 and 1504 in the Renaissance. David’s altitude is 5,17 mtr including his pedestal.

B. Description of the object
The ‘statue’ ‘De David’ seems to be a man, which real name also is David . David is idealized represented, with muscles, veins and bones which are clearly visible. He is leaning on one foot and the other is set to the front. This is called ‘contrapost’. His left hand is hanging along his body, but nevertheless he is holding the beam with his fingers on his bag. With his right hand, which is laying on his shoulder, he is holding the other side of the beam.

Remarkable of this marble statue is the torso and a hand of David are too large in comparison with the rest of his body. They think that the builder of it, Michelangelo just made it like this, his intention to place David on a high pedestal, so the proportions seemed well. The statue is made of marble and has that color also. The dark color you see in the statue is made with shadow. David is made of a piece of marble with an add.

C. Picture aspects
The picture is very realistic, there is clear eye for detail. But the statue is idealized, the muscles are very thickened, he seems to be an bodybuilder. This work is figurative.

D. Composition of the object
David is a man who is standing in an ‘contrapost’, that’s why we call the statue asymmetrical. He stands in a natural attitude. David is looking to the right, to the god Goliath, before he is going to duel with this god. He wins this duel. He hit an stone on the head of the god, and the god dies.

E. Meaning of the object
This is an religious object, it confirmed an story of the Christians. The David is standing in an witness. David has been made in the name of nobleman Piere Soderini. It seems to be that the statue is made for the Christians, to put in a church. So it’s Decoratively. In fact the title is simply the name of the man, ‘David’

F. A Professional judgement
Personally I like this statue, because I think it’s very special. The proportions are not correct exactly, but in an other perspective seemed they well. David is made through Michelangelo to place on an higher pedestal so the people see the statue from down. He has changed the proportions so that they are good when you look to the statue from frog-perspective. When you are looking to the statue from equal altitude, you will see it’s has not the correct proportions. The right hand is too big.
